It is with great sadness we share the loss of the owner and Master Tailor at Peter's Tailor Loft...

Peter Paul Uhlir

Age 90, entered eternal life on May 20, 2026, surrounded by the family he cherished most.

A devoted father, grandfather, craftsman, athlete, and proud American, Peter lived a life defined by courage, perseverance, generosity, and love.

He was the beloved father of Frank (Mary Alice), Jim (Leonora), Joe (Tish), Paul (Linda), Steve (Noelle), and Harriet (Doug), and the proud grandfather of Corah (Edson), Emmett, Joey, Evelyn, Matthew, Stevie, Lewin, Audrey, Tommy, James, and Maggie.

Born in Hungary, Peter came of age during one of the darkest periods in his homeland’s history. At just 21 years old, during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, he bravely escaped Communist Hungary in search of freedom and opportunity. Through President Eisenhower’s “Operation Safe Haven,” Peter was welcomed to the United States in 1957 as one of thousands of Hungarian refugees seeking a new beginning.

Arriving in Cleveland with little money and unable to speak English, Peter relied on determination, hard work, and the strength of Cleveland’s Hungarian community to build a remarkable life. In 1961, he married Mary Catherine Holleran, and together they raised six children while creating their own version of the American Dream. Though he made Cleveland his home, Peter never stopped encouraging his family to leave Communist Hungary. His sister, Rozalia, eventually emigrated to California, while his brothers, Jozsef (deceased) and Ferenc, remained in Hungary with their parents, Nandor and Rozalia (both deceased).

Following in the footsteps of his father, a master tailor in Hungary, Peter devoted his life to the art of tailoring. He began his career at Joseph & Feiss Co. before becoming Master Tailor at Higbee’s. In the late 1960s, Peter and his wife founded Uhlir’s Tailor Loft in Mentor. He later joined Joseph A. Banks in Shaker Heights as Master Tailor before relocating Peter’s Tailor Shop to University Heights, where his legacy continues today.

Peter’s extraordinary craftsmanship earned the trust of clients from across the country, including professional athletes, business lleaders, foreign dignitaries, and generations of loyal customers who appreciated his timeless style and meticulous attention to detail. More than his skill, people were drawn to Peter’s gentle nature, sharp wit, humility, and genuine kindness. Over more than six decades, he built not only a successful business, but countless lasting friendships. His legacy continues through the many tailors he mentored and trained over the years.

Beyond his work, Peter was an accomplished athlete and lifelong competitor. As a young man, he trained with the Hungarian Olympic Team as a distance runner and continued running throughout his life, including participation in the inaugural Revco Cleveland Marathon. He loved animals deeply, especially his homing pigeons, which he continued raising until very recently.

Peter found his greatest happiness in simple moments with family and friends — camping, fishing, boating, celebrating graduations and weddings, and spending time with his beloved grandchildren. He was a loyal Cleveland sports fan, faithfully cheering for the Browns, Cavaliers, and Guardians through every season. He lived with quiet sophistication, humility, and gratitude, never forgetting where he came from or how fortunate he felt to call America home.

Peter touched countless lives through his compassion, generosity, wisdom, humor, and unwavering work ethic. Above all else, he was devoted to his family, and it was while surrounded by them that he peacefully passed away.

If ever there was a true example of the American Dream, Peter lived it with grace and dignity
